Ben’s five peak challenge for charity

Posted on: June 28th, 2019

We are delighted to report our Managing Director, Ben Knight has been in the local media recently for his latest challenge for charity. Ben will climb the five highest peaks in five differenBent countries in aid of the charity Families for Children.

Ben says “Families for Children, who aim to place young people into loving and supportive families, is a charity close to my heart, by competing this challenge I hope to encourage others to be active and raise money for this very worthwhile cause.”

The charity are holding a launch event on Sunday 7th July at Lukesland Gardens from 11am. Patron Judi Spiers, will be kicking things off with a live interview with Ben about his motivation for the walk and his decision to support the charity.  Families will also be able to walk with Ben around the gardens and enjoy a family picnic before sending him off to Northern Ireland!

I was ten, once!

Posted on: June 21st, 2019

Recently the weather has made it feel more like March than June, although the sun has finally made an appearance today!

Last year was one of the warmest summers we can remember, and it took me back to my ten-year-old self. Back in 1990 when the days seemed to last forever and the adventures we used to have like bodyboarding and exploring rock pools on our beautiful Devon beaches, or letter boxing and catching tadpoles on Dartmoor.

Every day seemed to last an eternity and even simply riding my bike with friends, making jumps in the back lane behind our house and dens in the garden were things I now look back on so fondly.

Sometimes we used to arrange with the dads to go to the park for a game of football or a giant rounders match. On the beach my French cricket skills and diving in the waist deep sea to catch plastic footballs at full stretch is probably what shaped my love of tennis, football (as a goalkeeper) and still to this day my passion for being in the surf and for generally being outdoors.

Life is very different now and work occupies so many hours of every week and month. As parents ourselves we know how important it is to know that if you are at work, your children are being looked after and cared for in a safe and fun environment.

Making friends and trying new things all helps to create memories and build foundations which will aid them in their growth and development.

Here at High 5 we want to do everything we can to protect our marine wildlife and our beautiful local coastlines from plastic pollution. Our oceans are slowly turning into a plastic soup and the effects on ocean life are chilling.

As a Surfer’s Against Sewage Beach Clean Kit winning school we will join forces with Discovery Surf School to form an unstoppable OCEAN GUARDIAN TEAM this summer, protecting the beautiful stretch of coastline from Bovisands to Bigbury.

But we need your help! By combining the awesome people power of our coastal communities with our innovative new Ocean Plastic Emergency Kits we can together create a vital first line of defence against marine plastic pollution on our most loved beaches; providing havens for wildlife and beautiful spaces for everyone to enjoy.

We have arranged two stupendous Ocean Guardian Gatherings for families of our campers and after-school adventurers –

  • Sunday 17th June at Bovisands Beach
  • Saturday 14th July at Mothercombe Beach

All are welcome along to enjoy a day of beach cleaning, family games, rockpooling, friendship and fun. Our partners at Discovery are also hoping to join us! We will all work together to ensure that we remove and recycle as much plastic pollution as possible.

We will also be raising awareness across all of our social media platforms, shouting about your incredibly inspiring efforts and sharing our message as far and wide as we possible can help to help the Plastic Free Coastlines message reach people across the world!

It’s not too late – if we act together now we can protect the world’s precious oceans for future generations. If you would like to come along and get involved please give us a shout on our facebook page or email us at info@high5sportscamps.co.uk for details about meet times and locations.

Say YES to new adventures with High 5 Sports and Activity Camps.

We’re super excited for May Half Term Camps to begin at our Stover and Mount Kelly sites and wanted you to be the first to know which new experiences your children could be enjoying throughout the week.

We’ve really thought outside the box when putting together the additional activity programmes this time round and are offering our most action packed line up yet….

We have listened to your feedback and after the huge success of our Trampoline Time at camp we are hosting this activity twice within the week at both Stover and Mount Kelly sites. Trampolining is a great holistic health giver, bringing both physical and mental benefits – it’s hard to feel blue when you’re bouncing!

As S.A.S Ocean Guardians, we are committed to providing environmental education and applying a plastic free playtime philosophy to the programme. Our Junk Modelling sessions will see campers get crafty making sea creatures and learning hands on about the threat of plastic pollution to our coastlines.

Thrill seekers- we’ve got your back! Our zorbonauts go head over heels (literally!) for our Bubble Football tournaments running at both sites this half term. Campers at Stover can also enjoy our Laser Tag outdoor quasar. This incredibly exciting activity offers players the chance to experience real life battlefield scenarios but is totally safe and causes no pain when you get hit! An activity not to be missed, laser battles gets booked up and is often full so book early so you don’t miss out on a space.

Our campers at Mount Kelly will be treated to a visit from For Goodness Snakes Reptile Zoo on the Wednesday. They will be bringing with them a whole host of non-poisonous and very friendly reptiles and amphibians to look at, hold and learn about in this fascinating area of natural study.

To finish the week we have the ever popular Wild Cooking sessions at Stover, our campers will learn how to build and light a fire safely (last camp using only a magnifying glass, hay and some old jeans!) before having a go at preparing and cooking on the open fire. Of course hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows will be served up for all as a reward for creating fire!

That’s just a taster is some of the activities planned so if you would like your youngsters to live the adventure within our welcoming community under the guidance of our experienced staff, please click here to explore all of our additional experiences on offer and secure your place today.

Stover School and the NEW Mount Kelly Camps Bookings are OPEN!

Posted on: April 25th, 2018

After receiving some smashing feedback from both campers and parents about our recent Easter camps at Stover, we couldn’t be more excited for the May Half Term and Summer camps to begin!

Memorable moments included our zorbonauts flying head over heels in our bubble football tournament, our Rookies getting hands on learning about nature and wildlife during our Young Explorer’s Day, and also making fires, toasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate under the expert guidance of our Wild Cooking Leader Survival Steve!

Huge highlights of the week included receiving a beautiful message from long time camper and super star Rookie Justine. Justine wrote how much of a great time she’s had attending camp for the past few years and how she’s “learnt lots of new things and made lots of new friends.” This is music to our ears as this is one of our primary objectives for any child joining us for the holidays. Thank you so much Justine!

Happy Mum Tracey left us this message: “My 3 children have loved going to your camp this Easter. It’s their first time and they are desperate to come back. Wonderful to pick up 3 muddy, tired children each day. They have each made new friends and couldn’t wait to tell me what they had been up to! Looking forward to the summer holidays!” Thank you so much Tracey, it was our pleasure!

We can’t think of a better way to spend the holidays than being away from screens exploring and adventuring in the great outdoors.

If you would like your youngsters to join us for our most action packed, fun and inspiring activity programmes yet please click here and secure your place today.

We are super excited to announce we now have an all NEW camp starting at Mount Kelly Prep School, Tavistock from May Half Term. If you have any friends, relatives or anyone else who you think might enjoy what we offer. Please could you spread the word so families form another part of the county can benefit from the same action-packed school holidays that we know your kids love.

PROUD ANNOUNCEMENT: High 5 Sports Camps have won Official S.A.S Ocean Guardian Status

Posted on: March 22nd, 2018

All of us at High 5 Sports Camps are super proud to announce that Surfer’s Against Sewage have ordained our school with official Ocean Guardian status. We are 1 of only 25 schools shortlisted from entries all over the UK and have been awarded a super special Ocean Plastic Emergency Kit (OPEK).

As official SAS OCEAN GUARDIANS we have pledged to protect the beautiful stretch of coastland from Bantham to Bovisands in Devon together with our beach partner, Discovery Surf School.

Growing up in a passionate surfing community and frequently visiting the coast within our programme of camp activities means by default we relish the great outdoors and have huge respect for our unique coastal environment. We have witnessed first hand how plastic pollution is devastating our beautiful beaches and marine ecosystems so wanted to do something that helped protect them locally, but also something which broadened awareness nationally and beyond. Here is how our OPEK is going to help us achieve this:

#MINI BEACH CLEAN BINS – We now have a 360 litre volume wheelie bin stationed at Discovery Surf School on Bigbury beach. Alongside the bin is a kit which provides the information, inspiration, guidance and equipment for beach goers and our campers to do their own #MINI BEACH CLEANS. As well as special SAS litter pickers, bin bags and beach clean buckets, the special Ocean Plastic Bottle Recycling Hatch (AKA the lid!) will ensure that we recycle as much plastic pollution as possible.

SCHOOLS BEACH CLEAN BOXES – From buckets to giant test tubes and special ‘Graptor’ litter pickers to Plastic Free Schools campaign kits our box contain the tools, information and inspiration to enable our youngsters to take action to protect their favourite beaches in their own way.

This gives us such a unique opportunity to integrate environmental education and beach based events into our activity programmes for the year – challenging our campers to eliminate and help combat the unnecessary use of single use plastics, while inspiring and empowering the communities they represent to follow their lead. We will create a vital first line of defence against marine plastic pollution on our favourite beaches.

Since 2009, the Big Spring Beach Clean has removed over 100 TONNES of plastic pollution from the UK’s coastlines. An epic effort of almost 40,000 people and we’re so excited to join them for 2018. Watch this space for news of our upcoming Spring and Summer beach clean events. If any of our families would like to get involved with our activities and initiatives then give us a shout! You can also follow the movement on social media using the hashtags:  #SASOceanGuardians
#MiniBeachClean #PlasticFreeCoastlines

Massive thanks to Surfers Against Sewage and also to Greggs for sponsoring and supporting the OPEK creation and delivery.
